January 2012: A New York Times article titled “How Yoga Can Wreck Your Body” has created quite a stir. We want to make sure you hear all perspectives so nobody is unnecessarily turned off this wonderfully nurturing activity.
Sunshine Coast and In Touch Yoga instructor Georgia Cyr (The Blissful Yogi) responds:
“The moral of the story, for me: Find a style & a teacher that suits you. But, most importantly, always listen to your own body before you listen to the teacher’s instructions. When listening, make sure it’s your body you’re hearing, NOT your ego! Pain is not progress. Pain is damage being caused. A lot of the poses we see in the media, which look so impressive, are ones with high potential to injure. Remember, yoga is more than the asana (posture). Rather than striving to look impressive, strive to look inside. Watch your breath. Find ease in your body. Practice mindfully, with no pain.”
